CALM Support Series logo
Overview

The Curriculum for Adults Learning Math (CALM) was designed to give adult students a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics. Teachers who have worked with CALM know that it relies heavily on tactile manipulatives, visuals, and student collaboration and may feel very different (to both students and teachers) from the way they learned in school when they were younger. This online workshop series is intended to help teachers deepen their understanding of the content, teaching strategies, and overall organization of the CALM curriculum. Each support session will focus on a specific content topic. Participants will have a chance to experience CALM activities on that topic, reflect on CALM’s approach to teaching that topic, and share ideas and questions with other teachers.

While registrants are not required to attend a CALM Orientation and/or participate in the asynchronous CALM Introduction to participate in the CALM Support Series, we strongly encourage them to do so. The Support Series builds from the prior knowledge gained in the other CALM offerings. Participants will also have the opportunity to schedule follow up one-on-one coaching sessions with the facilitator, if desired.

**This event is open to Massachusetts teachers only.**

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE math teachers who are using or are interested in using the CALM curriculum
  • Limited to instructors and staff from Massachusetts adult education programs
Description

Developing a robust understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents is a major focus of CALM. This 90-minute virtual workshop will introduce you to how these concepts develop in learners, and why CALM begins with benchmarks, easily visualized fractions, decimals, and percents that can help learners estimate and understand the size of less familiar numbers that they encounter. You will participate in a CALM activity that involves virtual Fraction Stations, and reflect on how benchmarks (and tools that go with them, like number lines) can help students build a solid foundation for working with fractions, decimals, and percents.

About a week before the event, registrants will receive a separate email from the SABES Math team at TERC (sherry_soares@terc.edu) with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Facilitate an open middle question
  • Explain the core concepts students need to understand about fractions, decimals, and percents
  • Explain the progression of number and operation sense topics in CALM
  • Get support and share best practices with other teachers
Presenter(s) / Facilitator(s)
Prerequisites

None, although attending a CALM Introduction (online, asynchronous) or Orientation (Face-to-face) is strongly encouraged.
