Overview

In this session designed specifically for teachers working in corrections, come and learn how to freely access theme-based writings by students (both incarcerated and not). This resource includes standards-aligned activities that allow you to teach reading and writing in a way that is inspiring, motivating, and effective.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • English language arts teachers of all levels working in corrections facilities
  • ELA teachers in all adult education programs
Description

In this session, you will learn how to use The Change Agent, a free resource for DESE-funded programs, to teach reading and writing to students in corrections. The Change Agent is a theme-based online magazine that publishes student writing on topics that are relevant to adult learners. Articles are available in PDF, so teachers in corrections can easily print out the articles they want. Articles are multilevel and include standards-aligned pre- and post-activities and extensions that are classroom-ready and can be used offline. You will receive guidelines on how to teach to the standards for reading and writing and will have access to “packets” of articles by student writers who are incarcerated. These writers are inspiring role models for students; the topics they write about are relevant; and their writing and activities are engaging and thought provoking. Depending on the size of the group, you may work in small groups to explore key activities/lessons. You will then share with the whole group how you might use and/or adapt these activities in your classroom.

You will receive 2 PD hours in LACES upon completion of this session.

Please note: You cannot access this course from the SABES website. You will receive an email from Zoe Reinecke of the ELA PD Center 1–2 days before the course begins with instructions on how to access the course.
