Overview

In this two-part offering, advisors and staff who collaborate with advisors are invited to learn about the process of developing an advising scope and sequence for varied-level adult learners.

In the first session, you will discuss the benefits of developing a structured advising program, explore a sample advising scope and sequence, and begin the process of determining what advising structure will work for your context.

In between sessions you will determine which elements of the sample scope and sequence will work for your program.

In the second session, you will share your advising scope and sequence ideas and receive feedback on your plan from facilitators and peers.

Description

Having an advising scope and sequence ensures accountability and increases the efficiency and effectiveness of your advising program. Join this two-part offering to begin, revise or further develop a scope and sequence for your advising program. We will be exploring and adapting a sample advising program scope and sequence document that uses a student-centered and holistic advising approach to help each student achieve their unique goals.

The offering is a total of four hours and consists of two sessions. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory.

  • Session 1  (May 23rd, 1–2:30 pm): Presenters will share their rationale and present their sample advising program scope and sequence, followed by breakout groups to begin the discussion of what will work for your context.
  • Asynchronous work (one hour): Between session one and two, you will dive into the sample document to identify what you will keep, what you will adapt, and what challenges you anticipate.
  • Session 2 (May 30th, 1–2:30 pm): You  will share ideas, pose questions and challenges, and receive guidance from our facilitators and peers.
