This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL educational leaders
Description

Adult ESOL educators come to the field of adult ESOL through varied pathways. As a result, they bring a variety of strengths and skills to their work. The seven standards of the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Speakers of Other Languages provide a unifying framework for educators and program leaders to identify and explore areas of strength with their teachers as well as areas that teachers may need to strengthen.

In this two-part course, we will explore five strategies for using the ESOL Professional Standards to support programs and teachers, with the aim of improving learning opportunities for students. After learning about the strategies, you will create a plan for bringing one approach back to your program, adapting as needed for context, opportunities, and constraints.

This course references the ACLS Class Visit toolkit, the Beyond the Checklist professional development series, and the What to Look for Guides based on the ESOL Professional Standards. These tools provide educational leaders working with ESOL teachers guidance in using the ESOL Professional Standards for class visits, professional learning, and program improvement.

The total number of PD hours for this offering is 3 (two 1.5 hour facilitated online sessions).
