Advisors know that trauma has an impact on adult learners’ ability to learn and pursue their goals. Now more than ever, advisors are seeking to understand and apply trauma-informed approaches to benefit the students they work with. In this course tailored to advisors, you will explore how to support student resilience by applying trauma-informed approaches and frameworks to student scenarios. You will then make a plan to implement one new practice in your own work, and have a chance to share your experience and receive feedback.
- Advisors (or staff in any other student-facing role) with any level of experience looking to provide more trauma-informed services
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Since the effects of trauma can directly impact an adult's ability to persist in an educational setting, understanding how trauma impacts learning and using trauma-informed practices in your advising work will increase a student's ability to pursue their education and career goals. In the first part of the course, you will learn to understand and recognize how trauma affects us mentally, physically, and behaviorally (e.g., fight, flight, freeze, submit responses). The first breakout session will give you a chance to explore these concepts in the context of your advising work.
Next, you will explore a trauma-informed approach, a framework of trauma-informed equity principles, and a framework for building resilience. Using these tools, you will explore a model for how to work with a student who is experiencing re-traumatization, as well as a self-care tool that staff and students alike can use. The second breakout session will allow you to apply these new tools and approaches to different student and work scenarios. You will end the first session by formulating a plan for implementing one of the approaches in your own practice. A follow-up session will allow you to reflect on your experience and receive feedback and additional tips to support your practice.
