Overview

Project based learning can be seen as either an alternative or supplement to skills based learning.  In project based learning, the product takes the focus, and skills are developed because they are needed to complete a project.  Participants will be expected to participate in the following activities: 1) Attend an opening workshop which will explain and give examples of what project based learning is and how it might be implemented in an ABE/ESOL classroom or program.  2) As an individual or a group, decide on a project to develop.  3) With mainly asynchronous support from the group facilitator, develop a project that can be tried by an ABE/ESOL class.  4) Test out the project with an ABE/ESOL class.  5) Send an electronic version of the project to the group facilitator. 6) Attend a closing workshop in which every participant presents their project and discusses what went well and what changes they might make to the project.  Note:  The understanding is a project could be so small that it involves one class or even one person for one class or so large that it can involve and entire ABE/ESOL program for weeks.
