Overview

Part of learning a new language is learning how to talk about math. Unfortunately, math has not traditionally been a regular part of adult ESOL instruction, and many ESOL teachers are not comfortable teaching it. This self-paced, moderated online course is the second in a series for ESOL teachers who would like to deepen their understanding of math and learn how to integrate math and numeracy skills into their ESOL classrooms.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Any ESOL instructor interested in integrating math into his or her language acquisition classroom. No prior math background is needed; however, instructors must have successfully completed Mathematizing ESOL I.
Description

Mathematizing ESOL II is designed to give you the math knowledge you need to integrate benchmark fractions, percentages, and decimals into your language classrooms. You will engage in math activities, reflect on your own knowledge and assumptions about math, and learn strategies for integrating benchmark numbers into your ESOL lessons while continuing to focus on language acquisition and effective communication.

Upon successful completion of the course, all participants may download a certificate of completion.

Optional: Participants may earn 18 PDPs by completing a culminating project: creating (with the guide of a rubric) a lesson plan for ESOL students that integrates math and incorporates the key elements of each lesson in this course. Complete requirement details for earning PDPs are available from the facilitators.

This course runs over 5 weeks. The estimated time to complete the course (not including the optional final project) is 18 hours.
