Overview

This online, self-paced mini-course provides an introduction to or review of the instructional shifts of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education for English Language Arts and Literacy (CCRSAE for ELA).

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • New staff and anyone who needs to learn about the CCRSAE instructional shifts for ELA. It is also highly useful for all of us as a refresher on the three shifts in theory and practice.
Description

What: A brief, useful, and engaging introduction to the three instructional shifts of the CCRSAE for ELA, facilitated by Dr. Amy Trawick.

When: Starts the second Tuesday of every month, August–November 2017 and January–June 2018, and stays open for three weeks; the course takes 3–4 hours, working at your own pace.

How: This fully online, self-paced, lightly facilitated course is composed of readings, videos, and activities. Topics include the use of Internet resources, informal knowledge checks, journaling, and planning for putting the instructional shifts into practice.

Why: For standards-aligned curricula and standards-aligned teaching, you need to know the standards!

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the origins and purposes of the CCRSAE
  • Locate and navigate the CCRSAE for ELA
  • Explain the importance of the three instructional shifts prompted by the CCRSAE for ELA
  • Access key resources related to standards-based ELA instruction
  • Incorporate basic teaching approaches that address the three instructional shifts
