Overview

Managing a classroom that includes pre- or non-literate adult ELLs as well as those with basic literacy in some language is very challenging. This workshop addresses some of the issues involved in including non-literate learners in a classroom with literate learners and ways to provide learning opportunities for both groups.

Description

Managing a classroom that includes pre- or non-literate adult ELLs as well as those with basic literacy in some language is very challenging. The needs of the literate (e.g. a language rich environment, opportunities to increase oral skills in English) often conflict with the needs of the non-literate (not overwhelming them with environmental text, continuing to build only oral skills aggressively before moving too quickly into literacy, helping them understand school/learning behaviors and concepts such as how a book works). However, with thoughtful planning and inclusion of self-directed activities and games, a classroom that manages to serve both groups can be achieved.  This workshop will address some of the issues involved in including non-literate learners in a classroom with literate learners and ways to provide learning opportunities for both groups. Participants will have the opportunity to explore materials that work for this purpose as well as to reflect on what materials will probably NOT work for one group or the other. Teachers should come with specific situations or issues in mind that they would like to ask about or discuss relative to the goal of mixing the two groups.  Viewing of http://www.readinghorizons.com/webinars/using-learning-centers-to-meet-… before this class is requested and recommended.
