Math Academy 2026 schedule Slide
Overview

The Math Foundations Academy is designed to engage instructors in inquiry and reflective learning to expand the effective math and numeracy instructional approaches they currently use or are interested in adding to their teaching toolbox. The Math Academy will include two institutes, each composed of an in-person session, synchronous and asynchronous events, coaching, and a community of practice (CoP).

Below is a summary of the institute themes and mathematics content for the Math Academy. The complete Math Academy includes both institutes:

Institute 1 (Sept-Oct): Arrays to Area Models to Algebra Tiles

Math Content: Number and operation sense, multiplication concepts, writing algebraic expressions, solving quadratic equations

Institute 2 (Nov-Dec): Number Lines to the Coordinate Plane

Math Content: Number and operation sense, measurement, linear equations

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Both new and experienced math educators, including ESOL instructors interested in incorporating math into their language learning experiences.
Description

This blended learning experience offers educators the opportunity to examine essential math content through contextualized exploration and collaboration with colleagues. Throughout the Math Academy, teachers are invited to be the student first, to be curious about the math themes and instructional tools and strategies introduced in the Institutes, and to lean on the learning community fostered in the Math Academy. Coaches with math and numeracy instruction experience in various settings are there as thought partners and collaborators to guide and support teachers along the way.

This academy comprises two institutes, each of which follows the same structure:

  • Pre-work:  Through readings, video, and student work, this 1.5-hour self-paced course will orient you to the math content of the upcoming sessions and specific mathematical knowledge for teaching.
  • The in-person session: You’ll spend the day (6 hours in-person, lunch provided) with SABES facilitators and the other folks in your cohort experiencing activities as learners and engaging in discussion with colleagues. You’ll leave with valuable classroom resources.
  • Coaching: You will meet with your SABES coach to explore directions relevant to your practice and to work on your final project for this institute—an instructional plan that you can use in your classes.
  • Community of Practice: With a SABES facilitator, you will meet with a small group from this cohort to continue growing your learning and supporting one another.
  • Synchronous workshop: To conclude the institute, you’ll attend a one-hour online workshop in which you continue your learning about instructional routines, look at student work, and make plans for next steps.

The Math Academy Institutes blend self-paced, in-person, and virtual facilitated sessions, along with individual and cohort coaching time according to the following schedule:

  • Institute 1: (11 hours minimum; 15 hours maximum)
    • Pre-work (Sept. 14 - 23): 1.5 hours
    • In Person (Sat., Sept. 26; 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.): 6 hours
    • In Practice (Sept. 27 - Oct. 23):
      • Coaching and Community of Practice: 2.5 hours minimum (an additional optional 4 hours available per person)
      • Online workshop (Oct. 23; Time TBD): 1 hour
  • Institute 2: (11 hours minimum; 15 hours maximum)
    • Pre-work (Nov. 2 - 11): 1.5 hours

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Incorporate into your practice an instructional routine that helps teachers listen and observe what students know and what they need to know
  • Customize workforce and contextualized CCRSAE-aligned SABES Math resources to create your own learning progression as part of an instructional plan
  • Identify your needs for math content knowledge, coherent instruction, deep questioning skills, and wait time
  • Engage in collaboration, discovery, and activities to derive understanding and increase confidence in facilitating these experiences yourself
  • Create opportunities for students and other teachers to experience math and numeracy in ways that nurture their identity as “a math person.”
