Overview

Close working relationships between Integrated Education and Training (IET) and IET for Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) programs and their employer, workforce, and occupational training partners are key to successful recruiting and post-training transitions. This session will combine an informative webinar, a collaborative activity, and a webinar sharing session. Through this process you will develop action steps for IET implementation that includes partner-related tasks. The focus of this session responds to the PD needs identified from a recent survey of current IET/IELCE program directors.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • IET/IELC program teams which include external partners, such as MassHire Career Centers, MassHire Workforce Boards, and occupational skills training providers in addition to AE directors, instructors, and advisors
  • Program directors and instructors who want to be strategic in building partnerships for an existing IET/IELCE
Description

Integrated Education and Training (IET) and IET for Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) are important career pathways strategies for simultaneously building occupational, basic or English language, and workforce preparation skills allowed under WIOA. Building strong relationships between IET/IELCE programs and their training and workforce partners is key to successful student recruiting and successful transitions after the program. Additionally, collaboration between IET/IELCE programs and employer, workforce, and occupational training partners is also a way to make sure that programming incorporates real-world, relevant, and up-to-date knowledge and skills.

The initial webinar will provide the guidance and tools needed to develop partnerships, leverage partner relationships to recruit potential students and assist with the job placement process. Following that, participants will complete a planning activity with their IET teams. You will explore a resource guide to help you implement an IET/IELCE: Developing Basic Skills Curriculum for an IET: A Guide for the Pathways to Employment Program. In the sharing webinar, you will complete a reflection exercise using feedback from your peers.

It would be ideal if IET/IELCE teams, including any MassHire Career Center, Workforce Board and workforce training providers could attend the webinars and then complete the planning activity collaboratively. However, even if all team members cannot attend the webinars, they can collaborate on the planning activity remotely. Teams will have from April 28th to May 1st to complete the planning activity.

The collaborative effort is well worth it. Here is what one IET director said about attending the session with their occupational skills provider last year: "It is important that all members of an IET or IELCE team (in our case basic skills instructor, Nurse Aide instructor, Advisor) work from a common framework and toward common objectives...Our team found that sharing some workshop time together to engage in shared, guided reflection was a great way to strengthen our program."

Schedule:

The total time for this PD activity is approximately 7 hours. This PD event involves three activities and all are required to complete the PD.
