Overview

We are happy to announce a new online course to support practitioners who wish to obtain the Massachusetts ABE Teacher's License, one of the few licenses in the country completely dedicated to teaching basic skills and ESOL to adult learners.

The course comprises eight individual online modules that will provide the information and support you need to successfully obtain the ABE Teacher’s License. Module 1 begins with an overview of the License and is followed by modules that will help you prepare for the two required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTELs), build a portfolio that will meet the required Licensure standards, and prepare for your demonstration of teaching.

In addition to helping License-seekers meet the MA state requirements, these courses are designed to help adult educators use theory and standards to inform and build their teaching practice. Many who have earned the License report that they have found the process to be extremely helpful in strengthening their practice, all within the context of working with adult learners.

Module 1 will open on October 27, 2020 and run through November 20, 2020. Please see the description below for the dates for future Modules 2–8.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • New and experienced adult educators who wish to pursue the ABE Teacher’s License
Description

Massachusetts is fortunate to be one of the few states that offer an ABE Teacher’s License along with professional development support for educators who wish to pursue it.

If your goal is to secure the Provisional License, the first two modules will cover what you need to know; if you wish to secure the Professional License, you will proceed on through the remaining modules until your portfolio is complete.

License-seekers who complete Module 2 will then have the option to be paired with a coach who will provide individualized support. As you write practice drafts of portfolio work, you will save those drafts to a personalized Google folder shared by your coach, who will review your work and provide feedback. Your coach and other members of the Program Support PD Center Licensure team will always be ready to answer questions and conference with you via computer.

Each of the ABE Teacher’s Licensure modules is expected to take approximately four hours to complete, although individual time may vary. Although not required, the schedule is designed to allow License-seekers to complete the entire sequence within one academic year:
