This is the third video in the series Creating Robust ELA Unit Plans Using the SABES Template. SABES recommends that you view the videos in numerical order to see how Lauren's conceptualization of the unit evolved over time. Earlier videos provide needed context for later videos.

In VIDEO 3, you will learn how Lauren Twardy, an ABE teacher with Middlesex Community College, approached the Priority ELA Standards section of the SABES ELA Unit Plan template

Lauren discusses the following in the video:

  1. Advice she has for practitioners and programs choosing the Priority ELA standards for a unit;
  2. Examples of how she improved her unit as a result of using the template; and
  3. Benefits of carefully completing this section.

Guiding Questions: As you watch the video, think about how you would respond to these questions from the SABES REVIEW GUIDE: ELA Unit Plan.

  • Is the unit built around a realistic number (~3-5) of priority CCRSAE-ELA Standards, at the appropriate level? (Secondary standards are optional)
  • Are all the priority standards related to the culminating assessment?
  • Does the unit include a mix of Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language standards? Are Reading Foundation standards included for CCRSAE levels A-D?
  • Does the unit provide opportunities for students to (1) engage with complex text/academic language, (2) focus on evidence, and (3) build knowledge? (three instructional shifts)
